Human-Powered Submarine:
The 12th Mantaray
What is a Human Powered Submarine?
Defined by the International Submarine Races Committee, a Human Powered Submarine is a free flooding (liquid-filled) vehicle that fully encapsulates the occupant(s) and operates entirely beneath the surface of the water. The submarine propulsion systems must be directly coupled to a human being and shall not employ any energy devices. In addition, all power trains must be direct-drive without the use of any de-coupling devices.
Where Do the Races Take Place?
The 17th International Submarine Races (ISR 17) will take place at the Carderock Division of the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center in West Bethesda, Maryland, from the 23rd to the 28th of June 2023.
How Do We Prepare for a Race?
As we are an entirely student-led team, we are responsible for the designing, building, and testing of our submarine. We also communicate directly with industry professionals to gain insight through their expertise as well as receive donations in the form of services, parts, or equipment.
Why a Human-Powered Submarine?
The Human Powered Submarine team gives students the ability to develop their skills through the application of the entire engineering design process in a real, work-like environment. Our members learn how to collaborate as a team, communicate with industry professionals, meet hard deadlines, and follow rigorous design requirements. Not only does the submarine have to be capable of being fully submerged in water, but being strictly human powered presents its own unique set of challenges that the students must overcome. Ultimately, this complicated project helps to develop capable engineers as our members are more confident and better prepared for challenges they may face in their future career.
